Ni River Middle Named Intel Schools of Distinction Finalist

Every year, Intel honors U.S. schools demonstrating excellence in math and science education through innovative teaching and learning environments. To be considered as an Intel School of Distinction, schools must develop an environment and curricula that meet or exceed benchmarks put forth by national mathematics and science content standards.  Up to three schools at each level—elementary, middle, and high school—are named as finalists in the math and science categories. This year, Ni River Middle School was selected as a finalist in the science category.  They are the only school that was selected from Virginia as a finalist.  The 18 finalists will receive a cash grant of $5,000 from the Intel Foundation and a trip to Washington, D.C., for a four-member team from their school and district that will take place September 10-12, 2012. Six winners will be selected from the finalists and receive an additional $5,000 cash grant. One of these winners will be selected as the "Star Innovator" and will receive an additional $15,000 grant. All five winning schools and the Star Innovator will also receive products and services from program sponsors.

New Reports Coming Soon for K-2
As part of our Division practice, we periodically review report cards.  For the past year, a committee consisting of parents, teachers, and administrators worked to develop a revised kindergarten, first, and second grade report cards.  The revised
report cards are an effort to increase communication allowing for an accurate depiction of the student’s progress.  The modifications reflect the changes in instructional practices and evolving standards, which includes changing from a three-point to a four-point scale. More information will be forthcoming from your school in the upcoming months.
