Mr. Don Leonard, Director of Bands
Mr. Leonard is currently in his third year as Director of Bands
at Courtland High School. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree
with a concentration in Education from Virginia Commonwealth
University, where he graduated with honors and was recognized
as the Outstanding Undergraduate Student during his senior year.
Throughout his teaching career, his ensembles have consistently
received Excellent and Superior Ratings at Concert and Marching
Festivals at the District and State level.
As the Director of Bands, Mr. Leonard is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the
Courtland Band Program. He directs the award-winning Royal Brigade Marching Band,
the Concert and Symphonic Bands, the Jazz Band, and the Percussion Ensemble.
Mr. Leonard also teaches the AP Music Theory Course at Courtland High School.
For more than twenty years, Mr. Leonard has been active as an adjudicator and clinician for
Concert and Marching Contests and Festivals throughout Virginia and North Carolina.
He has maintained a private studio for Brass students in the Greater Richmond Area.
He has been a member of the Mid-Atlantic Band Camp staff for the past six years,
working with the Drum Majors, teaching Low Brass Master Classes, and serving as Recital
Chair for the Middle School student recitals. Mr. Leonard performs regularly, on Euphonium,
as a member of The Commonwealth Winds, an ensemble comprised of music educators,
professional musicians, and other highly talented instrumentalists from Central Virginia.
Professional memberships include MENC, Virginia Band and Orchestra Director's Association,
National Band Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Mr. Leonard currently resides in Hanover County, Virginia with his wife, Marcey, and their two
sons, Matthew and Evan.
