Classroom Rewards Program
Twelve teachers in two elementary schools will be participating in a classroom reward pilot program. Under a grant received from Virginia Action For Healthy Kids, these teachers at Chancellor and Salem Elementary Schools will be encouraged to use non-food rewards as reinforcers for academic achievement. This initiative flows from the adoption of the school division's wellness policy. Teachers may access the “Alternatives for Classroom Rewards” list posted on the Intranet under Wellness Policy Regulation 5 Resource Materials. Parents may contact the Wellness Dietitian or their teacher for information.
Wellness Body Measurements
In accordance with the school division's wellness policy; height, weight, BMI, blood pressure (optional), lipid profile measurements (optional) will be recorded on a random sampling of 500 students beginning this fall. Parents will be required to opt-in to this confidential program and will be notified of results. Students will be tracked over the course of the next few years. All Spotsylvania County Schools will be participating in this wellness initiative.
Healthy Eating Messages
Posters
In an effort to promote healthy eating messages, four schools in our division will be participating in photo shoots. These photos will be taken of students and staff at the various schools. Just like previous years, photos will then be enlarged into posters and displayed throughout these schools. This effort is supported by Chartwell’s Food Service, Ukrop’s Supermarkets and Vision Photography. Photo shoot dates are September 26 and 27. Participating schools are Livingston Elementary, Courthouse Road Elementary, R.E. Lee Elementary, and Thornburg Middle.
Film Project
Working with our school division’s high school media instructor, Public Information Dept., and Food Service Dept two schools will participate in another Healthy, Tasty And Fun film project this spring. This project places students both in front of and behind the camera for an exciting, educational event where the DVD end product will be shared with all schools in the division. Students from Courtland Elementary, Freedom Middle School and the Career and Technical Center will participate in its production.
