The K-12 Mathematics program in SpotsylvaniaCounty correlates with both the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Process and Content Standards. All math classes are encouraged to use and integrate technology as well as present mathematical concepts using a variety of methods to meet student needs. Middle and High School courses regularly implement graphing technology, and all high schools have access to the TI-Navigator wireless system. This technology may be used to check student understanding of content and to enhance math lessons.
Mathematics Specialists work with teachers throughout the school year to provide assistance and education to enhance professional growth and knowledge base. Teachers are encouraged to attend after-school workshops which are on the strands of the SOL and/or on specific concepts. Specialists and mathematics lead teachers also conduct workshops at their schools during regularly scheduled mathematics department meetings.
Students meeting upper level requirements in fifth grade may take an advanced placement assessment in the spring of that school year. The criteria used for acceleration include the student’s end of year math grade, fifth grade SOL math score, placement test score, and observable behaviors score. The combined placement score will determine if the student is placed in Math 6, Middle School Math I, or Middle School Math II. Middle School Math I covers all sixth grade standards and part of the seventh grade standards. Middle School Math II completes the seventh grade standards and all of the eighth grade standards.
High school course offerings range from Algebra I through AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics. Students take Algebra I and Geometry courses in a variety of ways that include daily classes (DB) or taking the course over a two-year period. The focus of the Algebra, Functions, and Data Analysis class, which is offered in most high schools, is to apply the mathematics and bring concepts to life. This course is taken prior to Algebra II. Students who want computer classes select from Visual Basic or C++.
