Health and Physical Education

Health and physical education provides a vital and integral link in the development of the whole child. The program curriculum follows the Virginia Standards of Learning from kindergarten through grade ten. Sports Medicine, Recreation and Wellness I, and Recreation and Wellness II are electives offered in high school.

The purpose of health education is to help students acquire an understanding of health concepts and skills and to apply them in making healthy decisions to improve, sustain, and promote personal, family, and community health.

The intent of physical education is to help students learn the skills necessary for performing a variety of physical activities and understand the benefits of achieving and maintaining a physically active lifestyle. The process of participating regularly in a physically active lifestyle will lead to personal enjoyment, challenge, satisfaction, and a health-enhancing level of personal fitness.

Students in grades four through ten are tested annually on the Virginia Wellness-Related Fitness Tests. Recognition is given to students who excel.

Accomplishments
Elementary Physical Education Enhancement Program
Currently eight elementary schools are participating in the Elementary Physical Education Enhancement Program. The participating elementary schools are: Berkeley, Cedar Forest, Chancellor, Courthouse Road, Lee Hill, Parkside, Robert E. Lee, and Smith Station. Students in these schools have physical education class with a specialist twice weekly for 45 minutes, rather than only once each week. This program is intended to provide elementary students with additional physical education experiences with a trained specialist.  Anticipated outcomes include a more positive attitude toward physical activity, greater appreciation for a healthy lifestyle, and a positive impact on students’ physical condition. Greater focus on skill development, primarily in the realm of lifetime sports (golf, tennis, etc.).
