Head Start, a federally funded program, provides preschool for four year old children who are income eligible. This comprehensive preschool program promotes school readiness for low income children and provides family support in the areas of medical care, housing, financial literacy, nutrition, education, and positive parenting.
Spotsylvania County provides Head Start Programs at five schools: John J. Wright Educational and Cultural Center, Lee Hill Elementary School, Salem Elementary School, Livingston Elementary School, and Wilderness Elementary School. Each classroom accommodates up to eighteen children.
Program Overview
*The school day is 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM Monday through Friday.
*School bus transportation is provided.
*Breakfast and lunch are provided.
*The staff includes a professional pre-school team.
*The curriculum used is Creative Curriculum, which focuses on
socialization within developmentally appropriate classrooms.
Academic expectations include a focus on preschool SOL, developing
emergent reading, communication, and math skills. Additional
intervention strategies are being reviewed to help families address
ways to support their child’s growth and development.
Eligibility
*Children must be four years old by September 30 of the year they
begin.
*Selection factors include family income, education of parents, family
stress, health or developmental concerns.
