Applications are available in English and Spanish.  Please call the office for information on translation services.

Applications are available at all elementary schools, John J Wright Educational and Cultural Center, the Head Start Administrative Office, The SCS Administrative Services Office (School Board Office) Spotsylvania County Dept. of Social Services and the Spotsylvania County Health Dept.

Head Start, a federally funded program, provides preschool for four year old children who are income eligible.  This comprehensive preschool program promotes school readiness for low income children and provides family support in the areas of medical care, housing, financial literacy, nutrition, education, and positive parenting.

Spotsylvania County provides Head Start Programs at six schools: John J. Wright Educational and Cultural Center, Cedar Forest Elementary School, Courtland Elementary School, Salem Elementary School, Livingston Elementary School, and Wilderness Elementary School. Each classroom accommodates seventeen or eighteen children.

 

Program Overview 

*The school day is 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM Monday through Friday.                                                                                                                     

*School bus transportation is offered; however transportation is not guaranteed depending on location.

*Breakfast and lunch are provided free of charge.

*The staff includes a professional pre-school team.

 *The curriculum used is Creative Curriculum, which focuses on  socialization within developmentally appropriate classrooms.    

* Academic expectations include a focus on preschool SOL, developing emergent reading, communication, and math skills.             

*Additional intervention strategies are being reviewed to help families address ways to support their child’s growth and development.

                                              Eligibility

*Children must be four years old by September 30th of the year they begin.

*Selection factors include family income and determined risk factors of child and family.  


*Parents must apply in person at the Head Start Administrative Office located at the John J Wright Educational and Cultural Center: 7565 Courthouse Road Spotsylvania, Virginia  22553
        

*Applications are accepted Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
