The Driver Education Classroom Phase is offered as a classroom course in the tenth grade as part of the health curriculum during the first semester in health and physical education classes. Thirty-six hours of classroom driver’s education is required. The Behind-the-Wheel portion of the driver’s education program is offered to students after they complete the classroom program.

The classroom portion utilizes a workbook. Our physical education teachers in the tenth grade teach this part of the program. The state has outlined topics that will be covered in the 36 hours of instruction. Last year the state added the requirement that aggressive driving strategies be taught in the classroom portion of the program. Students must also pass a separate test involving knowledge of alcohol and it’s effect on the body. Students who are 15 years old and who have completed the classroom portion of the course qualify for the Behind-the-Wheel course.

Behind the Wheel instruction is no longer offered by Spotsylvania County Schools.
