TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks are furnished free of charge to all students. There are a few exceptions for classes which utilize a “classroom set” of books – used only within the classroom setting, but for the most part all classes issue textbooks to all students. (The only charge would be for the loss or unacceptable damage to the book. Textbooks are generally anticipated to have at least a six-year life of service, therefore a graduated damage/replacement schedule is enforced.)
Textbooks used in the school division are carefully reviewed prior to purchase. When a new textbook is needed for a course, a committee of teachers, supervisory personnel, administrators, and parents reviews possible textbook choices from all publishers. That review includes consideration of: correctness of its content; alignment with the division curriculum; alignment with state and national standards; reading level; appropriateness for the grade/maturity level; supplemental materials which accompany the text; durability of the cover; and, cost. A public review of the preferred textbook is then held to allow public examination and comment. Based on the results of that public review, the School Board considers the textbook for adoption.
