The safety and security of all students and employees is of utmost importance. In a time when national attention focuses all too frequently on school violence, every reasonable measure has been taken to ensure that the schools of Spotsylvania County are safe places in which to learn and work. A brief description is provided below of major efforts taken to protect the children and staff and to protect instructional time.

 
Bus Behavior Regulations – Bus behavior guidelines for students can be found in the Student Code of Conduct.
 
Emergency Drills – Spotsylvania County Schools maintains a locally developed program of practicing emergency drills each semester. 
 
Fire Drills – In accordance with state law, all schools conduct periodic building evacuation drills. View the actual state law and the report form that principals have to complete after each drill.
 
4-SAFE-VA SCHOOL SAFETY PROJECT- Spotsylvania County Schools participates in the 4-Safe-VA School Safety Project that is provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia. 
 
School Safety Audit – The state of Virginia requires that each public school conduct a school safety audit every three years. Spotsylvania County Schools has expanded that program to include a review of the school building, grounds, programs, and regulations on an annual basis. 
 
School Resource Officer Program – In cooperation with the Sheriff’s Department, Spotsylvania County Schools maintains the presence of a deputy in each high school. The School Resource Officers are also available to middle schools and elementary schools as needed.
 
School Safety Officer Program – On the staff at each high school are two School Safety Officers. Their responsibilities include the supervision of the parking lots, hallways, cafeteria, and school grounds.
 
School Crime Hotline – Spotsylvania County Schools maintains a 24-hour hotline for students or patrons to report suspicious activities that occur on grounds. Tips provided through the hotline are passed along to school authorities or to law enforcement officials, as appropriate.
 
Student Code of Conduct – Division’s Student Code of Conduct. This document is a policy of the School Board and represents the major behavioral guidelines for students.
