Maintenance Questions

Q1.
We submitted a work order sometime ago. As of this date, the work has not been completed. How long will it take before our work order is addressed; and, do we need to send another work order?

Q2.
Our school/location wants to purchase new appliances to replace old or worn out equipment. Do I need to submit a work order and call Maintenance before we purchase the items?

Q3.
My parent organization or my class would like to create a picnic area, a garden or outdoor classroom. Do I need to have my principal contact Maintenance to put in a work order before we begin?

Q4.
We had items donated to our school. The items are too big or there are too many items for us to pick up. Will the Maintenance Department pick up these items for us?

The Maintenance Department is staffed by a combination of licensed contractors, skilled tradesmen and workers who provide services in electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC), carpentry, painting, groundskeeping, and preventive maintenance, as well as custodial operations. The maintenance department services 39 locations within Spotsylvania County Schools and various County government buildings. The Department's mission is to maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment for students and staff with regard to buildings and grounds.

		The Construction Department
The Construction Department's knowledgeable staff strives to provide the students and staff of the division with facilities that are not only appealing but functional and energy efficient. The Construction Department has skilled professionals working in planning, development, construction and management of capital projects. They work closely with state and local agencies, engineers, and architects in facility construction. The field managers (clerks of the works) have expertise in construction, as well as observing and managing the contractors and construction workers at various building sites. They are responsible for assuring that the contracted work being performed for the division's projects are completed and free from defects and deficiencies.

Q1. My company is interested in bidding on projects for the school division. How do I know what the requirements are and what projects are currently open?

Custodial and Warehouse Services

The custodial coordinator is responsible for the purchasing and distribution of cleaning supplies and equipment used by the schools' custodial staff. Serving 39 locations with the necessary supplies of paper towels, soap, toilet paper and disinfecting solutions assures the health and well-being of the students and staff of Spotsylvania schools.

This department also assists in moving items such as books, pamphlets and special needs equipment or setting up for special functions presented by the schools or support departments.

		Custodial/Warehouse Questions
Q1. My company is interested in supplying a quote for custodial supplies. How do I find out if there are any quotes open and how do I get on the list as an available vendor? Q2. I am interested in a position as a custodian. How do I apply?

The energy manager oversees the school district's multi-million dollar utility budget. Since the inception of this position in 2005, energy usage in the school division has dropped 19%. The energy manager consults with the director of maintenance on the most environmentally friendly and cost effective construction and retrofitting work tasked by the school division. The energy manager also acts as a resource and provides leadership for the division's utilities and recycling programs.

The school division's recycling program started in the 2007-2008 school year. Over 250,000 pounds of white paper are recycled each year by staff and students in the school system. The future goal is to implement a comprehensive recycling program to include cardboard, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles.

		ENERGY MANAGEMENT QUESTIONS
Q1. What do we need to do if we are having a program or event at our school after hours and we need the A/C or heat left on? Do I submit a work order for this?


MAINTENANCE TRIVIA -During the 2008-2009 school year, 17,223 work orders were submitted and completed (that is nearly 70 work orders per day). -Maintenance and custodial workers maintain and clean over 3.67 million square feet of facilities and 1,292.6 acres of school grounds. -The first packaged toilet paper was the 1857 invention of American, Joseph Gayetty, and was called Gayetty's Medicated Paper.
