RAPE AGGRESSION DEFENSE (RAD) 2/21 - 2/24
In light of the recent abduction attempts in Spotsylvania County, Riverbend High School is proud to offer Rape Aggression Defense (RAD). Riverbend is making this self-defense course available to all of our female students and their female family members age 15 and older. RAD was created to develop and enhance the options of self-defense so they may become viable considerations to the woman who is attacked. RAD teaches our students how not to allow themselves to become a victim by teaching the four cornerstones of keeping oneself safe through Risk Awareness, Risk Recognition, Risk Reduction, and Risk Avoidance. RAD also teaches hands-on physical techniques to break choke holds, bear hugs, and wrist grabs. The course ends with a 3 hour session in which trained instructors simulate attacks. For more information, see http://www.rad-systems.com/ . There is no cost for the course. RAD will be offered between Tuesday, February 21st through Friday, February 24th 2:30 - 5:30. The attached Parental Consent form and Registration and Release Forms are due to Eric Wright by February 17. Space is limited to the first 30 applicants. Further questions can be submitted to Kandy Woehler kandyc1023@comcast.net or Eric Wright at ewright@scs.k12.va.us
We'd like to invite all your elementary and middle school children ages 6-14 to participate in this year's annual Grizzly Mile Run at RHS on Saturday, March 3. (Children 3-5 may participate in the 300m Cub Run). The event is staffed by Race Timing Unlimited and the RHS Track & Field team. It's a great fund raiser for our team and a great time for the kids. A t-shirt is included in the cost of registration, and post-race snacks are provided.
Hope to see you there!
The Virginia Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (VASFAA) is pleased to announce that it will host 20 Super Saturday sites across the Commonwealth of Virginia on Saturday, February 5, 2011
Super Saturday is VASFAA's annual service project at which individuals seeking funding for postsecondary education can receive FREE one-on-one assistance in completing the federal financial aid form, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Volunteers will be at each site from 10:00AM to 2:00PM.
Each Super Saturday site will offer TWO financial aid workshops that explains the federal and state financial aid process, followed by a Q & A period. The host sites will also have computers available for students/parents to apply for federal aid electronically, along with volunteer financial aid experts to assist. This event is open to parents and students of all grade levels as well as adults interested in furthering their education.
The focus of Super Saturday is to offer one-on-one assistance in completing the FAFSA. Once the student leaves the event, he/she will have initiated the financial aid process for any college they are interested in attending and will have met the priority filing date for most Virginia colleges. The financial aid process can be daunting. VASFAA hopes that by offering students Super Saturday, one day of free, expert assistance to accurately complete the FAFSA, we can help hundreds easily begin the process.
A $100 Book Scholarship will be awarded to one student at each Super Saturday site to be used at the winner's college of choice during the 2011 - 12 academic year.
